2nd RSG-Türkiye Student Symposium

The 2nd RSG-Türkiye Student Symposium was held on 27 September 2013 at the METU Cultural and Convention Center in Ankara, as a satellite meeting to HIBIT’13.

Keynote Speakers

• Francesca Ciccarelli: European Institute of Oncology and the European School of Molecular Medicine, Milan, on the systems-level properties of cancer genes and what they tell us about cancer drivers
• Lars Juhl Jensen: Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research, Copenhagen, on networks of proteins and diseases, and the STRING database

Programme

Four student presentations opened the afternoon:

• Sibel Deniz, with Cevdet Nacar and Uğur Sezerman (Marmara University School of Medicine; Sabancı University): determining the specific binding motifs on effector proteins of the Go alpha subunit
• H. Melike Dönertaş, with Sergio Martinez Cuesta and Janet M. Thornton (EMBL-EBI), multiplicity in the Enzyme Commission system for describing enzyme reactions
• Cemal Ulaş Kundakçı, with Canan Has and Jens Allmer (İzmir Institute of Technology): the effect of sequence redundancy on identification scores of tandem mass spectra
• Aybuge Altay, with Canan Has and Jens Allmer (İzmir Institute of Technology): quality assessment of tandem mass spectra

A session on the state of the field followed: Zeynep Özkeserli and Dinçer Göksülük on bioinformatics in Türkiye from an academic point of view, Gökmen Zararsız on Turkish bioinformatics researchers abroad, and A. Raşit Öztürk on the industrial view. The day closed with an industrial networking session.
